Navigation lights on a power boat

Navigation Rules, lights & bridges · Power boats

The Navigation Rules require a power-driven vessel underway from sunset to sunrise, and in restricted visibility, to show a masthead light, red and green sidelights and a white sternlight. Boats under 12 meters (39.4 ft) have a simpler option. Inland and International Rules are nearly the same here (Inland Rules 20, 23).

Commonly missed
  • The rules use length overall (Inland Rule 3(j)). A boat sold as 38 ft but measuring over 12 meters (39.4 ft) overall loses the all-round-white option and needs the full masthead, sidelight and sternlight set.
  • Each light must be bright enough to be seen at the minimum range for your length (Inland Rule 22), and lights and their installation must satisfy the Coast Guard (33 CFR 84.20). Check replacement fixtures against both.
